Home Security Tips To Guard Your Home While Away From Home

By Rich Rothstein

Going on vacation is supposed to be your time to kick back and relax. To get away from your stressful job and enjoy your family. The last thing that should be on your mind is the state of your home and valuables. We’ve gathered our most favorite and proven tips from our security professionals to share with you.

1. Be mindful of your social media.

As excited as you are for your vacation, posting about your getaway may not be the best idea. While your immediate friends and family will not use this information, it may be available to thieves who are up to no good. Nothing is better for them to know exactly when that flight to paradise is taking off or touching down.

2. Get Assistance from Friends and Family.

Chances are, you have a close friend or family member who will not be going on vacation with you. Ask someone you trust that would be able to pick up your mail/newspapers on a daily basis. While you can always notify your mail services not to deliver, it is not recommended as it is one more person who knows your home will be empty.

3. Interior and Exterior Lighting.

There are many different options that will not only protect your home while you are away, but add security for the long run. Timers are available for purchase from your local hardware store and discount superstore and can be easily installed on lights to give the effect that you are home. For your exterior lighting, motion sensors are also highly effective. If a thief feels as though there is an indicator alerting you that there is someone outside, they will most likely feel threatened and back off.

Most importantly, implementing these tips will allow you to have the most fun possible on your trip! Cherish memories from this experience, not the one where your Grandmother’s heirlooms were taken. Let us know below how your trip was or what else you do to protect your home while away.
